When you’re traveling backpacker style (with a very limited budget), a luxurious hotel is definitely out of the question. Why stay in rooms with 21-inch flat screen TVs when you’re just going out the entire day anyway? You’re traveling to enjoy a place you’ve never been to before (or some place you like going back to again and again), not to watch TV just like your usual lazy weekends in your own home.
When traveling, what you need are only two things: a shower to refresh yourself and a roof to sleep under. I literally did this back in Malasimbo fest when Beep and I pitched a tent to sleep in and found shower rooms for P20/pax. I wasn’t into that kind of stuff before, I initially wanted to book a decent room but Beep, being the mountaineer that he is (not to mention a cheapskate), persuaded me into being more economical. It was so boho, and to my surprise, I grew to love that simple travel lifestyle. That shower was the best thing I ever paid for for P20!
So for my solo travel to Coron, Palawan back in May 2012, I did a Backpacking Ala-Beep and carefully planned all my expenses to not exceed P5000 (4D/3N) all-in.
I remember while waiting for the boat for my island hopping with a bunch of other travelers, they asked me where I was staying. They were so surprised when they found out that I’m staying at a place for P400/night compared to theirs which is P1500/night.
I stayed at Patrik & Tezz Guesthouse. They’re ranked as the #1 Bed and Breakfast in Coron at Trip Advisor. They’re also ranked #5 in the Top 25 Best B&Bs and Inns in the Philippines! If you check the reviews, you’ll see how much backpackers loved the place. The room’s actual cost is P450 but they gave it to me for P400 since I’m traveling solo. (UPDATE: Check the new rates here)
Patrik and Tezz Guesthouse offers basic needs for backpackers: a bed, shower (with heater) and towels. Plus, they’ve got Wi-Fi! If you need a clean, private, quiet, and cheap inn or hotel in Coron, this place is highly recommended.
The owners, couple Patrik and Tezz (and Tezz’s mom) were just the warmest hosts. They helped me with all my questions on where to go, what to do, where to book my island hopping, and just about anything. It’s perfect for smart and practical travelers. After 4 days and 3 nights of stay, I paid for….P1200! Sweeeeet.
Patrik will arrange your transportation from and to the Busuanga airport. Fare for the one-way 45 mins ride is P150. The van will drop you off and pick you up at the guesthouse. Really convenient!
When Beep joined me in Coron in January 2013, we stayed there too. Patrik & Tezz Guesthouse will always be my home away from home in Coron.
